State Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich

The new building for the film and television school (Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen) in Munich will in future also house the State Museum of Egyptian Art. Like the tomb of the Pharaohs, this will be buried deep underground and will be accessible via a large ramp erected in the foreground of the building.

The precious exhibits, which are thousands of years old and occupy 2,200 square metres of display space, require the highest level of conservatory protection. To address these challenges, a host of innovative air conditioning and mechanical opening systems were included in the design of the display cabinets at the planning stages of the building. They were then also incorporated at an early stage in the planning of the building’s framework and foundations, to ensure a perfect exhibition result. New methods were also adopted to address the special lighting requirements of the building.

Despite all the technical finesse, the overall design of the exhibition will be extremely minimalist in style, in order to focus attention on the extraordinary exhibits of the collection. The materials used to stage the exhibition are limited solely to blackened steel, exposed concrete and non-reflecting glass. The ultra-modern, linear ambience will serve to complement the architecture, as an effective, contemporary stage for these masterpieces of ancient Egypt.
